There are certain subjects I tend to gravitate towards, like old stone walls, abandoned roads, old mills, and old foundations. The history behind these things is another passion of mine. Who built this wall? Why? What was the land used for?
I came across this unexpectedly one day will driving down an old highway. Who built it? What is it - a barn, a house? Why did the people leave? When? Do the original builders have any ancestors in the area? There are plenty of questions, and sometimes there are even answers.
And then there are railroads - old and new. This is a branch line of the former New York, New Haven railroad, that eventually became the part of the Providence and Worcester. It was last used in the late 1970s and officially abandoned not too long ago.
Like stone walls, old railroads can be found throughout New England and offer glimpses into those that lived and worked here in the past.
Nature eventually takes over, but there can always be something to be discovered.
Mother Nature also presents us with random beauty, sometimes when and where it is least expected.
This mallard duck was spotted in the middle of town only feet away from Main St. How many cars drove by and never noticed him and his companions?
Follow me as I share my wanderings in this space.
Together we can explore the world around us and perhaps learn some new things on the way.
